MODI is the character we created for MODO, a digital wallet that brings together banks, payments and benefits into a single ecosystem. From the beginning, the challenge wasn’t just to design a character, but to build a flexible and strategic brand asset, capable of growing with the product and adapting across multiple platforms, formats and campaigns.

The Challenge

Creating identity without relying on clichés The starting point was clear: to create an original character, avoiding animals, mascots or archetypes commonly used in the fintech category. MODI needed to feel approachable without being childish, expressive without becoming decorative, and adaptable enough to work seamlessly across digital, graphic, animated and physical environments. This meant thinking beyond a single illustration and focusing on a character designed to evolve over time.

Concept & Personality:

Designing behavior, not just appearance The hardest part of character design isn’t the character itself. It’s defining its personality. Once the visual direction was selected, we focused on building MODI from the inside out. Its physical design was directly connected to:

Expressions and facial language.     /      Body gestures and movement      /      Attitude, tone and way of interacting

The goal was to ensure that every pose, animation or appearance felt coherent, recognizable and aligned with the brand’s values.

Process

From exploration to a flexible foundation We developed multiple creative proposals, exploring different visual directions before arriving at the final character. The process included: Early conceptual sketches Personality exploration through expressions and gestures Pose explorations designed for reuse and adaptation Outfit variations to expand MODI’s presence across contexts

2D & 3D Exploration:

Flexibility across dimensions

MODI was developed through both 2D and 3D explorations, allowing the character to naturally exist across static illustrations, motion pieces, digital interfaces, printed materials and physical applications such as costumes or brand activations.

This dual approach ensured visual consistency while maintaining creative freedom for future uses.

Techniques:

Illustration, AI and adaptability To build MODI’s core assets, we combined custom illustration with AI-assisted workflows and modular design approaches. This allowed the character to be efficiently adapted and expanded across campaigns without losing coherence or personality.
